This wine is from Italy, Trentino-alto Adige region, Alto Adige - Sudtirol sub-region. Do you remember the first time you were blown away by a wine? Or, when you found one that upended your entire worldview of a variety? That's exactly what Tiefenbrunner's 'Feldmarschall von Fenner' managed to accomplish in several sips. I didn't need a score. Nor social proof. Muller-Thurgau could be good, that much I knew, but my first encounter with the Feldmarschall proved it could also be excellent. The estate, Tiefenbrunner Castel Turmhof, is situated in the the hamlet of Entiklar, in the northeast region of Alto Adige. As with many areas of Italy, evidence indicates vine cultivation by the Rhaetians, an early Alpine tribe, particularly during Roman times. (Alto Adige, or the Sudtirol, formerly part of Austria-Hungary, was annexed by Italy in 1919.) Today, Herbert Tiefenbrunner and his son Christof run the estate, with vines planted on the south-facing slopes surrounding the castle. Unique in the whole of Europe is the Hofstatt vineyard, where Feldmarschall has been cultivated since 1972, and rises 1000 meters above sea level. The Fennberg plateau (comprised of calcareaous, loamy soil and limestone) is an ideal geographical site for Muller-Thurgau, offering a safe orientation from north winds and a specific microclimate.The grape, Muller-Thurgau is a hybrid of Riesling and Madeleine Royale, created by Hermann Muller in 1882. It never rose to any occasion in Germany until after WWII, when it was widely planted and overtook Riesling in total area covered in vine during the 70s and 80s. By then in Germany, the sheer volume of Muller-Thurgau coupled with other trends created discontent, and ultimately a reversal of enthusiasm for wine produced from the grape.In Italy is where Muller-Thurgau is most exciting. And while there are others in Alto Adige producing solid expressions, the Feldmarschall remains the benchmark. You'll find no oak here; only stainless and concrete. It rests on fine lees for 6 months before bottling. A white wine that can age? Indeed it can, with a potential to further develop over the next 5-8 years. You'll find it on fine restaurant lists, but rarely in a retail environment. This wine is from United States, California region, Carneros sub-region. Time ?ies when you are having fun, and apparently when you are making Pinot Noir as well. Way back in 1983, we discovered we had a wide range of wine styles on our hands (literally and ?guratively) in the lots from the vintage. Some were rich and concentrated, and some were perfumed, fresh, and relatively lighter. We decided to capture the charm of those lighter lots by combining them and bottling them separately. We gave this bottling the proprietary name “Garnet' after the semi-precious gemstone. We have been making this wine ever since, and with the 2008 vintage we entered the 21st century -henceforth, Garnet will be bottled with screwcaps. Notice the graphic from the top of the box-no corkscrew/wine key required - just your bare hands. (We still recommend pouring it into a glass before enjoying it, however).Garnet is produced from Pinot Noir grown in the Carneros district. Our aim in creating each vintage of Garnet is to produce a refreshing, early-drinking style of Pinot, one that is full of cherry/raspberry varietal fruit, enriched and developed by aging in French oak barrels.We are often asked if we use a di?erent winemaking technique during fermentation in order to produce a less extracted wine than our Carneros Pinot Noir. To understand fully, one must start in the vineyard. Saintsbury gets Pinot Noir grapes from two dozen di?erent vineyards, the largest of which may be split into up to seven or eight lots. We use our experience to judge which techniques will bring out the best in each one. After fermentation, the wines are barrel-aged separately to allow them to show us their potential.After the wines have spent a few months in barrel, we taste each one. We discuss the merits of each lot and then make trial blends, with the goal of producing wines that will properly represent all our Pinot styles. In early spring the lots selected to become Garnet are assembled and the wine is bottled in early summer. he remaining lots continue for further barrel aging until just before the next harvest when the Carneros Pinot Noir and the Vineyard Series wines are bottled.. 13.5% abv. he Garnet Pinot Noir is enjoyed for the right combination of freshness and extract, grace and length. 2009 is an outstanding vintage for Carneros Pinot Noir and the '09 Garnet re?ects that - lush with bright, refreshing fruit and texture that mirror these ?avors in a seamless, rewarding expression of young, succulent Pinot Noir. Every now and then, like an alchemist turning dirt into gold, our compulsion leads us to a concoction so delicious we decide to release it into the world. Such was the case with Organic Cream Earl Grey. The magical afternoon when this blend sprang into existence began with the opening of a bag of organic High Grown black tea. Fresh, full bodied and lively, we knew immediately that this would produce something special. Next, we added oil of bergamot and rolled the tea in our flavoring drum. Fantastic. Moments later, someone had the idea to mix fresh cream into the blend for added depth and dimension. As we brewed our first pot, it was as though the planets had aligned and the gods of tea were shining down like the rays of the sun. The cup exhibited a profound depth created by the balance of bergamot and natural astringency of the organic leaf. As if that werent enough, subtly layered under this were the sweet notes of cream. We were in love we were in tea heaven we were well, we could go on but brewing a pot will help you understand everything.
