Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel 2008 750ml
USD 27.79 Ridge is one of the original and certainly still one of the best Zinfandel producers of the world. They are also producing top notch world class Cabernet and Chardonnay. They are on my favorite list of to go to wineries for aging. I would also like to mention they get super high scores from many of the top winner critics of the world. This is not a winery to me missed out on! Ripe nose of raspberry, plum, pepper and chapparel. Blackberry, mineral and vanilla notes dominate the palate. Well integrated tannins typical of this classic vineyard add to the long finish.In 1972, Ridge made its first Lytton Springs from vines planted on the eastern half of the vineyard at the turn of the century, and purchased both the eastern and western portions of the vineyard in the early 1990s, (In the 1870s, under Captain William Littons ownership, the two were part of one property; spelling evolved into Lytton by 1903.) The vineyard is planted to zinfandel and its principal complementary varietals.The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone (third person on bench wearing tall boots), a doctor who became a prominent member of San Franciscos Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridges production facility. At 2600, it is surrounded by the upper vineyard.In the 1940s, William Short, a theologian, bought the abandoned winery and vineyard just below the Perrone property; he replanted several parcels to cabernet sauvignon in the late 1940s. From these vines - now the middle vineyard- new owners Dave Bennion and his three partners, all Stanford Research Institute engineers, made a quarter-barrel of estate cabernet. That Monte Bello Cabernet was among Californias finest wines of the era. Its quality and distinctive character, and the wines produced from these same vines in 1960 and 61, convinced the partners to re-bond the winery in time for the 1962 vintage.The first zinfandel was made in 1964, from a small nineteenth-century vineyard farther down the ridge. This was followed in 1966 by the first Geyserville zinfandel. The founding families reclaimed the Monte Bello terraces, increasing vineyard size from fifteen to forty-five acres. Working on weekends, they made wines of regional character and unprecedented intensity. By 1968, production had increased to just under three thousand cases per year, and in 1969, Paul Draper joined the partnership. A Stanford graduate in philosophy-recently returned from setting up a winery in Chiles coast range-he was a practical winemaker, not an enologist. His knowledge of fine wines and traditional methods complemented the straightforward hands off approach pioneered at Ridge. Under his guidance the old Perrone winery (acquired the previous year) was restored, the finest vineyard lands leased or purchased, the consistent quality and international reputation of the wines established. Cabernet and zinfandel account for most of the production; syrah, grenache, carignane, and petite sirah constitute a small percentage. Known primarily for its red wines, Ridge has also made limited amounts of chardonnay since 1962.Lytton Springs, in Sonoma County, became part of the Ridge estate in 1991. A quarter centurys experience with this vineyard had convinced us that it was an exceptional piece of ground. Forty consecutive vintages of Geyserville attest to yet another stunning combination of location and varietals. Though born in the early sixties to the post-Prohibition world of modern California winemaking, Ridge relies on nature and tradition rather than technology. High Note Malbec Elevated Malbec Vista del Sur 2009 750ml
USD 11.29 Over the last several years the prominence of Malbec has grown in the United States. South American wines in general get more shelf space than they used to; Malbec is one of the leading growth categories within that. I for one am pretty happy about it. South America has long been a place to look towards for value. The increase in selection also means wea re getting more wines in every price range and that makes for more interesting choices. Today Ia ll look at a value priced Malbec.The 2008 High Note Elevated Malbec was produced by Vista del Sur Winery. Fruit was sourced in Argentinaa s Uco Valley, which is part of Mendoza. Grapes for this selection were picked from five vineyards; they ranged in elevation fron 3,200 to 5,000 feet above sea level. In addition to Malbec (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (7%), Cabernet Franc (4%), Viognier (2%) and Petit Verdot (2%) are blended in. This wine was aged in French (65%) and American (35%) oak; 24% of the barrels were new. This selection sell for around $12 but proficient shoppers will note that it can often be found for less than $10.While there is only a small amount of Viognier blended in to this wine, it does wonders for the nose, adding a lovely floral quality. Blackberry, blueberry and vanilla bean are also part of the aromatics. The palate is rich, and tightly wound, with an array of deep, dark berry fruit flavors. The finish has continued vanilla, along with chicory notes and a dollop of lingering minerals. This Malbec has firm but approachable tannins and sufficient acidity. This offering, while tasty on ita s own will perform best when matched with rich, full flavored foods.For a relatively low price point this Malbec offers good flavors and a particularly expressive nose.
