After separating layers in an extraction, it is necessary to “dry” the organic layer with a substance that absorbs water. Why is it necessary??
The common drying agent used is anhydrous calcium chloride, after an extraction is done. This is to further separate the aqueous layer from the organic layer, and to remove any contaminating water particles suspended in your organic layer, which is desired to be as pure as possible to make for a smooth recrystallization (if needed) or high % purity of the extraction.
